St. Jakob church is a church for youths, students and young adults in Bergen. We’re a part of the Bergen congregation of the Church of Norway and the Norwegian YMCA/YWCA.

Hundreds of youths, students and young adults gather here every week – for choir rehearsals, studying, food, community and our weekly Sunday service.

All our activities are in Norwegian, and except for a leaflet with the liturgy in English on our Sunday service, there is little to none English translation. However – most Norwegians speak English, and we hope and believe you’ll find someone who would love to have a conversation with you in English, and/or help you understand the essence of the information given in Norwegian. Maybe they’ll teach you a few words in Norwegian as well!

Our activities

Gudstjeneste – Sunday service
Sundays, 19:00

We celebrate our Sunday service at 19:00, followed by a hyggelig kirkekaffe (cozy church coffee) with a quiz. A nice place to meet new people and hear more about the activities in St. Jakob!
Our service is rooted in the traditional services from the Church of Norway, but has a modern twist with band and more modern hymns, worship songs and pop songs.

Taizébønn – Taizé prayer
Tuesdays in even-numbered weeks, 20:30-21:00

Taizé prayer is a meditative prayer, inspired by the community in Taizé, France. Readings from the Bible, meditative singing, silence and prayer. You can sit on the floor or on a chair, and sing along as much or as little as you want to.

St. JaKor
Thursdays in even-numbered weeks, 18:30-21:00

St. JaKor is our «low threshold choir» for young adults. We start each semester with an open rehearsal where everyone is welcome to join. After that, members of the choir practice Thursdays in even-numbered weeks, have some social events, perform at some services and end the semester with a big concert.
Everyone is welcome to join St. JaKor – no matter who you are and how you sing.

Kafé Jakob
Thursdays in odd-numbered weeks, 17:00-21:00

Every other Thursday the church is open from 17:00, for people to come by and hang out. Dinner is served from 17:30, and at 19:00 there is an event – either a teaching from one of our priests (Fokuskveld), a teaching from someone outside St. Jakob (TEO Talk) or a social event.

Dinner: 40 kr, we accept vipps or cash.

StudentlunsjStudent lunch
Fridays 08:00-15:00

On Fridays we open up the church for students who need a place to work or study. At 12:00 there is a lunch break with a delicious (and very traditional Norwegian) lunch buffet, where you can join a table and meet other students. At 13:00 you’re welcome to join a Midday prayer in the church.

Lunch: 60 kr, or you can become a Studentlunsj member for 250 kr and eat for free every Friday this semester. We accept vipps or cash.

St. JaKantoriet
Some Fridays, 17:00-19:00

St. JaKantoriet is a choir which mainly sings classical/liturgical music. An audition is required, and some experience with music reading and choir is a plus but not a requirement.

St. Jakob FK
Sundays in soccer season, 12:00 at Møhlenpris

If you like to have fun and play soccer, St. Jakob FK is the club for you! An informal and noncommittal soccer club – a good opportunity for a fun work out.

Strikkeklubb
Some Tuesdays, 18:30-21:00

Our own knitting club meets one Tuesday a month, to knit, eat cakes, help and inspire each other and talk. You’re welcome to join, whether you knit or (k)not.

Smågrupper

We have some small groups who come together every other week to talk about life and faith. As of now we have no English speaking groups. If you want to start up an English speaking small group, let us know!

Frivillighet

St. Jakob would not be possible without all our amazing volunteers! We want this to be a good place to use your talents to bless others. It is also a good way to get to know people here. Do you want to join our team? Let us know!

Other stuff

It’s impossible to list everything that happens in St. Jakob. Swing classes, movie nights, youth ministry, Eurovision watch party…. Follow us on social media to see our events and our weekly schedule.
